Description
Whatcom Community College invites applications for our first director for teaching and learning, which will support the development of a new teaching and learning center, funded by a Department of Education Title III grant. The director for teaching and learning will support and develop programming for institutional professional development for WCC faculty and staff. WCC is committed to improving student retention and graduation rates, eliminating equity gaps, and building community with faculty and staff. Reporting to the vice president for instruction, the director will work with faculty and staff to support the implementation of high impact practices that promote these institutional goals to strengthen the College and the community. The position will also oversee eLearning operations, which are well integrated into the instructional programs at WCC. This position supports all four institutional core themes - achieving success, building community, advancing equity, and enhancing
effectiveness.
Job Responsibilities
The director for teaching and learning will...
* Collaborate with faculty teaching and learning leadership (e.g., outcomes assessment coordinator, writing across the curriculum coordinator, equity and inclusion coordinator), college leadership, Title III project director, director for intercultural services, and college committees to develop programming for the teaching and learning center.
* Develop, design, coordinate, and provide ongoing professional development opportunities to support Title III objectives and college goals.
* Work with the director for assessment and institutional research and faculty outcomes assessment coordinator to develop practices to assess Teaching & Learning Center effectiveness.
* Provides leadership for eLearning operations at the College, including budget management and supervision of eLearning staff.
* Work with the professional development committee to support the coordination of professional development programming at WCC.
* Work with faculty to enhance and improve faculty orientation programming that promotes student-centered instruction and inclusive pedagogy, and builds community among new faculty.
* Develop leadership for faculty and staff mentoring programs at the College.
* Serve as a member of the Title III steering committee.
* Serve on relevant college committees.
Qualifications, Salary and Appointment
Minimum Qualifications:
* Master's degree in a related field (e.g., curriculum and instruction, faculty or organizational development, instructional design) or a Master's degree with at least one equivalent year of experience in a professional teaching and learning leadership role.
* Teaching experience, preferably in higher education
* Expertise in effective teaching and learning practice as demonstrated by degrees, research, presentations, or extensive professional development.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Doctorate degree in a related field (e.g., curriculum and instruction, faculty or organizational development, instruction design).
* Experience facilitating professional development in student-centered, culturally responsive teaching and learning practices.
* Experience with eLearning environments through online teaching or eLearning oversight.
* Experience coordinating large scale projects.
* Experience and knowledge about the community college mission.
The successful candidate will show evidence of:
* Strong communication skills, including active efforts to listen to faculty and staff regarding professional development needs.
* A demonstrated commitment to promoting a culture of inclusion in the workplace and classroom environments.
* Strong collaboration skills to use the expertise of WCC faculty and staff to promote improved teaching and learning environments.
* Demonstration of sound educational theory and practice and the ability to effectively support and promote effective practices with faculty and staff.
* Excellent facilitation skills.
* Effective use of data and evidence-based practices in training or teaching diverse populations.
* Experience working independently and in groups to achieve desired outcomes.
Salary and Appointment:
* This is a 12-month, full-time Administrative/Exempt position. Exempt from Washington State civil service law with an annual salary of $75,000 per year.
