The incumbent will lead a team of junior scientists in the development and qualification of cell-based biofunctional assays in support of Pfizer s vaccine programs. These assays will be designed to assess serum antibodies generated in response to vaccination in phase 0-2 clinical trials. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and executing experiments, analyzing data, writing reports and presenting results at internal meetings. The responsibilities also include clinical testing of human serum samples, and data review of the clinical assay results. The incumbent is required to multitask and work as part of a team to meet business-critical deadlines. This position operates with limited supervision and directs activities of four or more direct reports. Where appropriate, work will be done in a compliant manner according to relevant SOPs and cGLP and/or cGMP guidelines.


  • Oversee and direct the daily activities of four or more direct reports in support of biofunctional assay development with a focus on virus microneutralization assays
  • Design and execute experiments to develop and optimize biofunctional assays; provide in depth data analysis and evaluation of a path forward
  • Perform activities related to assay qualification and long-term assay maintenance, including design of experiments, authorship of related documents (SOPs, protocols, and reports), and development/qualification of critical reagents
  • Execute clinical sample analysis for phase 0-2 clinical trials
  • Train scientific staff in laboratory techniques in order that staff can function independently
  • Supervise activities of direct reports, provide scientific leadership, and foster teamwork, trust, and coaching among group members
  • Meet timelines in all assigned projects
  • Apply GLP guidelines to assay development and sample analysis, when required
  • Support internal or external technical transfer of assays
  • Work effectively with functional groups including Pre-clinical Research, Automation, Sample Management, Quality Assurance, Statistics, Research Informatics, and Project Management
  • Contribute to evaluation of new technologies through reading and understanding scientific and technical literature
  • Report and present scientific results internally to colleagues and senior management

  • Minimum Bachelor s degree with 8+ years relevant experience, preferably in Immunology OR a Master s degree with 6+ years relevant experience, OR a PhD with 0-2 years of relevant experience
  • Experience with immunoassays and/or cell-based assays
  • Strong ability to multi-task and work efficiently and productively in a fast-paced and highly collaborative environment
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Proficiency with personal computers including word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint and relevant scientific software is required

  • Experience in developing and troubleshooting immunoassays and/or cell-based assays designed to assess antibody functionality, such as virus neutralization assays, OPAs, or SBAs, is desirable
  • Experience with a 384-well assay plate platform using automation
  • Experience handling biological materials such as human and pre-clinical animal serum, as well as live bacteria or virus
  • Cell culture experience
  • Experience working in a GLP laboratory space, including SOPs, instrument IOQ/PQ, and good documentation practices.
  • Experience managing scientists is preferred, or at a minimum, mentoring or leading a team of scientists would be desirable.
