Description of Work

The maximum recruitment salary for this position is $67,000.

This position is located within the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division, Education, Training and Technical Assistance Bureau. The Standards Industrial Hygienist is a staff level position that provides technical support to the North Carolina Department of Labor, OSH Division, state and local government, and the employers and employees of North Carolina in matters of occupational health and industrial hygiene issues. The position reviews federal OSHA standards and policy documents, and writes and reviews Division policy documents, publications, and training materials. The position answers inquiries from the public and OSH employees and provides interpretations on OSH standards by phone and in writing. The position is also involved in state-specific rulemaking and variance requests. The position provides training (in person and online) to internal staff, employers and employees across the state. The position may be assigned to represent the agency on statewide committees seeking OSH expertise. The position works under the supervision of the Standards Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies Applicant must have considerable knowledge of safety and health related issues in both construction and general industry and the demonstrated ability to recognize potential industrial hygiene related exposures. Candidates must possess a considerable knowledge of industrial hygiene and possess a broad understanding of good safety and health practices and procedures including: the Occupational Safety and Health Act, OSHA standards, regulatory guidance documents and NC state-specific standards. The OSHA Health Standards Officer is expected to also have knowledge of safety standards to be able to provide some safety standards interpretations. Candidates must possess skills in research and policy analysis as well as strong technical writing and training skills. Candidates must have strong time management and communication skills (verbal and written), be able to multi-task and prioritize projects, and have good problem solving skills. Candidates must also be self-motivated, detail oriented, organized and able to complete tasks/projects within established time frames. This is an office position with work schedule Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A valid driver's license is required.

The selected applicant must live within 50 miles of the Raleigh office. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in industrial hygiene with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in the field of industrial hygiene; OR Bachelor s degree in industrial hygiene, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of experience in the field of industrial hygiene.
