About SUNY Maritime College:
SUNY Maritime College located on a 55-acre scenic waterfront property on the outskirts of New York City on the Throggs Neck peninsula where the East River meets Long Island Sound. The Assistant Director of Community Relations reports to the Vice President for University Relations and is responsible for the SUNY Maritime College's communication and marketing strategies and public information activities. Working with the President, the College's senior leadership team, faculty and other stakeholders across the College, the Assistant Director of Community Relations supervises a campus marketing and publications program including faculty, administration and students designed to promote and publicize the College and its activities to key audiences that include prospective students and enrolled students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, the local community, funders, governmental representatives and maritime industry leaders.
He or she will partner with the SUNY Maritime Foundation and the Maritime College Alumni Association to identify opportunities and build donor relationships that will increase resources for the College and help advance the College's agenda in line with the newly adopted Strategic Plan, \"Charting a New Course.\"
The Assistant Director will develop and foster relationships with international news media, editors, reporters, other communication directors, partner organizations, international institutions and governmental officials and their staff to enhance greater awareness about SUNY Maritime College and its ongoing research, programs, events, and dominant themes in the field as articulated in the Strategic Plan. The Assistant Director will facilitate opportunities for Maritime faculty to showcase their expertise and work and be active in public life.
Duties include but are not limited to:
* Collaborate with the College's senior team to voice through communications and marketing the mission, vision and core values of the institution
* Implement and regularly update the College's overall communications strategy and marketing plan with the aim of enhancing the College's visibility
* Write, Edit, lay out and oversee the production of all electronic and written promotional and marketing publications
* Manage all aspects of the production, writing and development of institutional publications such as Fort Schuyler and the College's Annual Report; Coordinate with the Alumni Association on publications as appropriate
* Maintain and expand key media contacts in the maritime industry and beyond; Identify audiences and messaging that dovetail with the Strategic Plan and its emphases; Develop, coordinate, oversee and attend press activities, press releases and events; Create and maintain relationships with national and international media and trade publications; Serve as contact for media requests and for other relevant news outlets; Manage and handle relevant information channels and platforms, including but not limited to live interviews, press releases and social media
* Develop and produce content for distribution through various information channels; Stay abreast of relevant platforms and content in the maritime and other relevant industries; Work with faculty to identify noteworthy and newsworthy College-related activities, policy-relevant research findings and reflections from maritime-themed journals; Work closely with faculty and staff to identify relevant events and opportunities; Maintain an updated database of experts in various maritime, engineering, transportation and other areas for use proactively and reactively with press, events and campus-wide activities
* Work closely with the President and Chief of Staff to assist with the development of institutional presentations and speeches, including internal and external communication on trips and visits, as well as in College-wide letters and reports
* Coordinate and provide logistical support to faculty, staff and administrators organizing local, national and international media and other events primarily aimed at raising the visibility of the College;
* Monitor appearances of faculty, staff and alumni in prestige media, as well as participation in forums and panels
* Oversee the Community Relations Associate to assess, revitalize and continually refresh digital communication, including the website look and feel, content, social media and newsletters
* Collaborate with administrative and faculty offices and centers to develop or assist with consistency in content, vision, look and feel, navigability
* Support all communications activities of the Admiral's Scholarship Award Dinner event, including video presentations, the published journal, other marketing material and speech writing; Work with the Vice President for External Relations and with the Director of Development to promote the Admiral's Dinner online and in print before and after the event
* Assist the Office of Admissions and other College administrative offices strategically and operationally with publicity and marketing
* Support the College's community relations efforts
* Support the Office of University Relations with development and other activities and events that are outside of normal business hours and that include some evening and weekend work
* Oversee Community Relations Associate to generate and manage an up to date photo library for use in publications and marketing
* Serve as a liaison between faculty/staff and key constituencies, including the media, policymakers, other academic institutions and news organizations
* Other duties as assigned
* Bachelor's degree
* Three years of professional experience required at minimum, ideally with some experience in the communications field, including on-line and print communications, social media, media relations, journalism and public relations
* Excellent interpersonal, writing, editing and oral communication skills required
* Supervisory experience and the ability to handle multiple projects under time and resource pressure
* Detail and results-oriented; strong knowledge of budget processes and evaluation of outcomes analysis
* Comprehensive knowledge of media operations, expertise in the field of public relations and release of information for publication
* Familiarity with higher education and the maritime industry
* Knowledge of the latest advances in effective use of digital and social media for effective corporate communication, including online communities, search engine optimization and other digital marketing tools
* Understanding of how to develop and maintain strategic networks of people, industry contacts and institutions to disseminate College-related news and information
* Master's Degree
Classification/Salary Range: The Assistant Director of Community Relations is a UUP position. The anticipated salary range for the position is $47,256 - $50,000 annually, with an outstanding benefits package (for more information please see the UUP Benefit Summary). Special Notes: This is a full-time calendar year appointment UUP Position. Fair Labor Standard Acts (FLSA) Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Internal and external search to occur simultaneously.
