Job Description

The Cost Accounting Manager position is a critical member of the Thermo Fisher Scientific - High Point Site finance team and will closely collaborate with operations in providing solutions to achieve operational and financial targets. This role provides support on a wide scope of operational, manufacturing, and strategic matters impacting the Site s objectives.


  • Integral role in the preparation of the annual budget, as well as periodic forecasts for the site
  • Develops and reviews labor and overhead standard costs to reflect actual costs on periodical basis
  • Provide relevant data, analysis and fact-based recommendations
  • Identify and document improvement opportunities based on best practices and knowledge of internal/external business challenges
  • Provide support for special projects/analysis within the Softgels finance team
  • Maintain and review product standard cost and analyze cost variances for management action and determine inventory balances to comply with US GAAP
  • Assist with the development of appropriate set of performance metrics for the business and then report and analyze these metrics on a consistent basis
  • Performs cost month-end closing (prepare journal entries as necessary, analyze inventory evaluation, inventory roll forward)
  • Analyzes and reports variances in expenses and materials relating to budget forecast
  • Develops and review weekly production data reports (i.e. production output, absorption, and yields)
  • Manages the development and maintenance of the costing system
  • Provides verbal and written reports of current financial status of the plant to department managers and senior management.
  • Coordinates with IT department for system issues, maintenance and development such as production, material purchasing, goods receiving, goods shipping, and other inventory related transactions.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of reports as required by regulatory agencies.
  • Finance partner to the cycle count/physical inventory process
  • Support and assist internal department reporting requirements such as audit schedules, tax schedules and Sarbanes Oxley compliance
  • Maintains fixed asset ledger
  • Provides analysis as needed for capital spending projects. Approves capital expense requests and ensures accurate tracking of expenditures.
  • Familiarity with Sarbanes Oxley implementation and control testing

  • Business analysis, financial planning and reporting skills that generate business insights that add measurable value
  • Understanding of updated Revenue Recognition rules as per (ASC606)
  • Current knowledge of trends in finance and functional best-practices
  • Ability to manage by influence
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (both written and verbal) and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a matrixed environment and capable of gaining commitment and coordinate action for initiatives
  • Ability to have effective working relationships across the company

  • Bachelor s degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA or MBA strongly preferred
  • At least 10 years of experience in finance related roles
  • At least 5 years in controlling/business finance positions with demonstrated success
  • Outstanding financial analysis skills
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment, working knowledge of cost accounting
  • Hyperion experience required
  • SAP experience is a plus
  • Advanced desktop application experience Microsoft Power Point, Excel and Word
