The Auxiliary Shop is a unit of Building Services that operates, maintains, and improves Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) related mechanical and electrical systems. These diverse systems serve a variety of facilities including classrooms, auditoriums, offices, kitchen/dining areas, parking decks, arenas/athletic venues, laboratories, clinics, surgery suites, clean rooms, data centers, museums/repositories, and vivariums. These customers depend on the Auxiliary shop to provide safe, reliable, comfortable, and efficient HVAC operations to achieve UNC's teaching, research, and public service mission.

## Position Description
This position is being recruited at the State banded role/competency of a Facility Maintenance Technician - Building Trades/Journey with a working title of Maintenance Mechanic/Filter Changer. The primary purpose of this position is to change filters for a broad range of HVAC systems. This includes operating a box truck in congested areas of campus, maintaining the filter warehouse, planning monthly and daily filter needs, and properly handling a high volume of both clean and dirty filters. The employee must take the lead in modifying established schedules as environmental conditions (e.g., pollen, construction dust) and other issues arise. All activities must be documented per university requirements. This position also performs preventive maintenance (PM) checks (e.g., adjust drive belt tension) and cleans HVAC equipment such as air handlers, exhaust fans, pumps, and air compressors. Additionally this position performs some troubleshooting and repairs to HVAC equipment and assists higher level mechanics and technicians in complex issues.

## Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
## Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
Must have knowledge of preventive maintenance on air handlers, exhaust fans (general and fume hood), hot and chilled water pumps, air compressors, fan coil units, vacuum pumps, motor controls and electrical safety devices. Must have ability to keep accurate records and make precise measurements.
This position requires the ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions (e.g., public health) require the University to close.
This position is required to work in healthcare facilities, with requirements including vaccines (currently varicella or chickenpox and flu), tuberculosis testing, and overall medical certification.
## Preferred Qualifications
Diploma in industrial or HVAC technical trades; ability to read and interpret mechanical and electrical diagrams; minimum of 3 years experience in a commercial or industrial environment performing mechanical and HVAC equipment maintenance and repair (air handlers, exhaust fans, air compressors, etc.).
## Special Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to climb ladders; move objects weighing 50 lbs; ability to wear a respirator, safety shoes, and other personal protective equipment.
