Job Description

This position is located in our Arlington Primaries Area Headquarters which maintains and repairs primary roads in Arlington, VA. Provides leadership and technical guidance to crew members involved in the safe and efficient performance of a wide variety of simple to complex roadway maintenance and repair operations.

Assists with development and planning of daily work schedules, assigns crew tasks, and monitors and documents work performed.

Performs the full range of equipment operation including complex tasks and oversees and performs preventative maintenance on equipment.

Assists in developing crew members through on-the-job training, feedback, and job assignments. Takes appropriate action and informs management when urgent or unusual situations arise. Provides oversight for contract crews as needed. Assists Maintenance Supervisor with other duties and responsibilities as needed to meet business goals.

This position is designated as essential and is required to perform all duties during emergency situations which may include but are not limited to inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable knowledge of highway maintenance materials, methods and procedures.

Ability to plan work schedules and identify and assign manpower, materials and equipment needed to accomplish the job.

Knowledge of Safety policies, procedures and programs.

Considerable skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy duty equipment and hand-held and power tools used for highway maintenance and repair.

Basic PC skills.

Ability to complete reports and records using simple business English and math; to provide technical direction and guidance to a variety of skilled, semi-skilled, and manual laborers; to perform manual labor and other physically demanding tasks; and to communicate effectively and interact successfully with co-workers, managers and internal and external customers.

Valid Commercial Drivers License required with ability to obtain required endorsements.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in road maintenance and/or construction.

CDL A preferred.

Skill in training others.

Possession of current DCR-Land Disturber, CPR/First Aid Certification and/or Materials certifications.

High school graduate or equivalent combination of education, training and experience demonstrating ability to perform the job.

Special Requirements

Safety shoes are required. Fingerprint-based criminal history background check will be conducted. References, work history and DMV records will be verified prior to employment. DOT-required medical exam and drug screen for CDL drivers. Applicants selected for interview with CDL will be required to perform a skills demonstration during interview process. All employees are required to work in emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs.
